The EU could “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it calls “unjustified” travel bans imposed by the US on five Europeans working on combating online hate and disinformation, an EU official stated.
European Leaders Condemn US Move as ‘Intimidation’
Officials from Europe including the French president charged the US administration of “bullying and threats”, after the visa restrictions targeted individuals who have been central to campaigns to introduce laws regulating US-based technology firms.
“For far too long, European activists have led organised efforts to pressure US companies to punish American viewpoints they disagree with,” stated a senior US official online. “This government will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”
Widespread Condemnation From EU Nations
Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported the French president in condemning the move.
The bans were imposed on Tuesday on an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with four anti-disinformation campaigners, including two in Germany and two in the UK.
An Escalating Conflict Over Regulation
The DSA is viewed by US officials as a type of speech restriction, while EU authorities argue the regulations are necessary to control inflammatory language and falsehoods.
This disagreement threatens to become part of a much broader existing cultural and political conflict between Washington and Europe.
