The Iconic Puzzle Game Wouldn't Triumph at The Game Awards — Another Award Type Could Fix That

As any significant honors show nears, there’s always a demand for introducing additional classifications to acknowledge unsung work and satisfy the spirits of enthusiasts dedicated to specific genres.

A fellow writer previously argued for a horror game category. It would be amazing. Equally deserving are strategy board titles, which is a dedicated supporter's campaign. However, I must insist for pushing forward just as with other dedicated enthusiasts, I possess a compelling case supporting my request remains most pressing and important of all. This is the request: We need an award type for logic-based games.

Categorizing Game Types

Categorizing art by genre is not a science; it remains highly personal, and typically spark debates concluding with vague boundaries. It's understandable that cinema institutions steer clear of genre categories. However, it represents a necessary evil for the industry of video games, which are so diverse they barely qualify a single creative category.

For comprehensive acknowledgment of achievement in video games to be recognized, and to ensure all game types to have a chance for representation, genre categories are essential.

Current Gaming Award Categories

Prominent interactive entertainment events offer these classifications covering Action, Action/Adventure, RPG experiences, Combat games, Sim/Strategy, plus athletic and racing experiences. Between them, these six categories actually cover a lot of ground, allowing placement for most games within them.

Not so for puzzle games. No appropriate category exists to put them. Think about these this year’s best games, showing diverse approaches: structural challenges in a particular game, the pulse-pounding block-matching of another game, engaging interpersonal challenges in another game. Which classification works within current classifications? Simply put, no category fits.

Recognition Challenges

Many instances occur excellent brain-teasers published annually that have no home in entertainment awards, if they accidentally match award groups including Mobile Game, VR/AR Game, or the extremely competitive Indie races.

  • An iconic brain-teaser got overlooked in any category in 2014
  • Another creative title was excluded that year
  • A beloved organization game received no acknowledgment that year
  • Limited numbers of brain-teasers barely qualified for independent or mobile categories

Value of Brain-Teasers

Commonly they're modest productions, but the art of the puzzle game is of massive significance. Well-known matching games rank among most popular titles worldwide and have been for an extended period.

The famous puzzle experience rivals well-known building titles claiming status as most purchased experience; it additionally competes as greatest title ever. Logic titles represent cornerstones to the art of video games, and they are in conversation across multiple categories.

Recommendation and Reasoning

Puzzle games wouldn’t have that issue. One could readily select a field of five with fascinating, diverse, deserving games annually without trouble — actually, with challenge, because you’d have to leave so many good games out.

And to reiterate, these represent titles without proper classification at major gaming awards. Puzzle game makers are working at the demanding boundary of video game design, producing among most fundamental forms within interactive entertainment. Similar to movie stunt professionals, they merit acknowledgment. Don't make them wait generations.
