This marks the conclusion of a long-standing era for long-running series, with the production studio announcing a revised release plan for One Piece, which has run continuously for more than 25 years and featured dozens of filler arcs. Commencing in the new year, once the current storyline wraps up, the animated series will go on a three-month hiatus until spring, when the Elbaph arc kicks off.
Updated Production Plan
Going forward, One Piece will produce a pair of cours every year for a maximum of 26 episodes. Toei states this will enable the anime to “dive even deeper into the core of the ONE PIECE world — incorporating more material, tempo, and timing of the original manga.” Yet, producers conclude by hinting at “thrilling developments” during the series' break, which means more One Piece content, such as the upcoming live-action adaptation, set to premiere during this gap.
Previous Hiatus Benefits
The series anime previously took a six-month break that started in late 2024 and concluded in April 2025. The intermission was for the production team to enhance the animation quality and let the manga to build a lead to avoid a rushed adaptation and lengthy recap episodes. The anime greatly benefited from this break, and it has managed to deliver fans with numerous action sequences, superior graphics, and less filler than previously.
Adopting Modern Trends
While a few summary installments sprouted up during this season, the positive effects of this new production schedule greatly outweigh the occasional interruption in the action. This also gives the original work, which is presently in the middle of the latest arc, to gain more ground on the anime. According to the news, this may lead to one episode of the anime covering a single manga chapter, with others instead covering one and a half chapters or more to compensate for time.
It's the end of a generation for anime, as the epic saga is the final major title to ditch the old-school way of creation, which focused on airing for almost the entire year. It's the reason why iconic series such as Naruto, and naturally itself have numerous side stories, and the standard of the animation can vary widely between one episode and the next. Nowadays, anime production is organized in cours, with a couple maximum coming out each year, allowing for better quality and greater accuracy to the original work.
